From 20 April to 22 April, the 9th Asian Conference in Regional Science was successfully held in Xingjian Sports Center, at SHU-UTS SILC Business School. This conference kicked off the 25th anniversary of SILC.
Asian Conference in Regional Science (ACRS) initially stemmed from a joint seminar co-sponsored by China, Japan, The Republic of Korea and Taiwan, China. In recent years, it has evolved into a platform encouraging Methodological compilation and exchange of cutting-edge ideas. As an increasing number of people pay attention to big data and artificial intelligence, it is crucial to call for international cooperation to withstand the pressure of technical development. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Walter Isard, the principal founder of the discipline of Regional Science, which makes this conference an event with special commemorative meaning. The conference aimed to exchange ideas and methods and kindle the passion for research, thus it attracted many experts from China, Japan, Republic of Korea, etc.
On the morning of 20 April, Professor Xue Ling, from Beijing University, hosted the opening ceremony. First, Professor Lyu Kangjuan, Dean of SHU-UTS SILC Business School expressed a warm welcome to all the guests and introduced the SILC’s current status and progress as an institution, then Professor Yang Huizhong, President of The Regional Science Association of China introduced the conference, expressing gratitude towards all the organizers.
Subsequently, Professor Manas Chatterji from The State university of New York, professor Sumona Banerjee from The University of Calcutta, Professor Tschangho and Professor John Kim from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Professor Lin Zhenjia from The National University of Taiwan, Professor Shi Minjun from Zhejiang University, Professor Ryo Itoh from Tohoku University, Professor Cheol-Joo Cho from Cheongju University, and Professor Emmanouil Tranos from The University of Birmingham respectively delivered keynote speeches, which stemmed from their research area and demonstrated their research progress, provoking in-depth discussion among all the experts.
On the afternoon of 21 April, Wenbo Building held 24 Parallel on topics including spatial economics, international trade, transportation studies environmental studies, business innovation and real estate. Several teachers from SILC participated in the discussion and positively represented the university. On 22 April, the experts who attended the conference visited the big data center in Anting Shanghai International Automobile City and witnessed one of the society’s latest developments—in the form of driverless cars.
The 9th Asian Conference in Regional Science successfully concluded, successfully encouraging academic exchange and international cooperation.
